Gerd Arntz memory app now available for Androids

03 feb 2012 The Dutch design agency Ontwerpwerk, multidisciplinary design has released The Gerd Arntz memory app onto the Android platform. The free Gerd Arntz memory app contains a selection of 250 from the more than 4000 pictograms Gerd Arntz drew between 1928 and 1965. The app is already available in de App Store.

Ontwerpwerk does its utmost to make Gerd Arntz's work visible for a large public. It is part of our cultural heritage and the agency believes his work is of great importance for the world of contemporary visual communication. Other initiatives of Ontwerpwerk are the book Gerd Arntz, graphic designer and the Gerd Arntz web archive. When we started with the website www.gerdarntz.org in May 2008 there were 500 hits, when one searched for Gerd Arntz’s name on the internet. At the moment there are more than 225.000 hits with 53.000 images. That's due to the website, book and the app.

The pictograms and illustrations you will encounter in the memory game are scanned from the original prints in the Arntz archive of the Municipal Museum The Hague. This accounts for some irregularities, which resulted from hand printing the linocuts. The only intervention concerns the background (usually brown or brownish paper), which was whitened to emphasize the contours of the drawings, whilst keeping the authenticity of the outlines intact.
