If you talk to an audience everybody interprets the spoken words in his or her own way. For instance if you ask everyone to buy a blue pencil, you get at least seven different shades of blue. Words become like butterflies dancing on the heads of the listeners. Hence the shape of the lectern. As an extra the wings start swaying gently when you touch them. The ‘wings’ were daubed with paint to associate the object abstractly with nature. The lectern was part of a series that was made to celebrate 300 years of the Academy. Another one was more like a counter for someone selling postage stamps at a service window. It was a chest and the closed inside was painted like a body. No one ever saw that.
